Where to File Candidate Nominating Petitions

FILING CANDIDATE QUALIFYING NOMINATING PETITIONS

PRESIDENTIAL STATEWIDE PARTY CANDIDATES (those not nationally recognized)

Statewide party candidates must file their original nominating petition in the office of the State Election Commission and certified duplicate[1] in the office of the Coordinator of Elections. Both of these must be received by the qualifying deadline and may be mailed to:

Primary candidates must also file a certified duplicate by the qualifying deadline with the chairperson of their party’s state executive committee.[2] Therefore, each primary candidate must file one original and two certified duplicates in the offices of their respective party. For your convenience, each state executive committee’s contact information is listed below. There are no filing fees.

However, primary and independent candidates for the office of United States Representative from a district located entirely in one (1) county are required to file their nominating petitions in the office of the county election commission in that county, i.e. Shelby County.  TENNESSEE SENATE; TENNESSEE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES; STATE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEEMAN AND COMMITTEEWOMAN

Primary and independent candidates must file their original nominating petition in the office of the county election commission in the county of their residence and a certified duplicate[1] in the county election commission office in each county wholly or partially within the candidate’s district (senate district for senate AND state executive committeeperson candidates, house district for house candidates). Note that independent petitions are not issued for the office of State Executive Committeeman and Committeewoman. Each of these documents must be received by the respective election commissions by the qualifying deadline. There are no filing fees.

 


[1] A certified duplicate is a photocopy of the original petition with the words “This is a true copy of the original”; signed by the person making the copy along with the copier’s name, title and date.   (Note:  Using blue ink for this affirmation helps identify that the copy is a certified duplicate)
